Chevy first used the Impala name from the late 50s up to 1985 on a series of full size cars, and briefly brought the name back as a performance package on the Caprice. In 2000, it finally came back as its own model, replacing the mid-size Lumina. It wasn't long until it became a full-size car again, and is combination of economical engines and award-winning performance helped it became the best selling car in its category in America.
