With production of the aging Cavalier and Corolla-based Prism drawing to a close, Chevy created the Cobalt to take their place. Based on the new Delta platform, this car first reached showrooms in 2004 with 2.2 or 2.4 liter Ecotec engines, giving it class-leading power. The car was a massive hit for GM, selling over 200,000 units per year during its first three years of production. Power and fuel economy gradually increased throughout the model run, while the SS received a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine in 2008. It was replaced by the Cruze in 2010.
