Chevrolet opened its doors in 1911, quickly merging with General Motors to become their volume leading brand. The distinctive bowtie logo was introduced in 1914, based on a wallpaper pattern GM William C. Durant had seen in a hotel room in France. The introduction of the "Stovebolt" 6 let Chevy compete directly with Ford to become a major automotive player in the '30s. The brand dominated the U.S. auto market with models ranging from the family-friendly Impala to the high performance Corvette in the post-war period, but they weren't able to keep up with competitors through the 80s and 90s, leading to GM's bankruptcy in 2010. After reorganization, the brand has led in technology, introducing the Volt, the world's first plug-in hybrid, and the Bolt, the first affordable electric car with a range over 200 miles.
